Since 1960 Fabindia has striven to become one of the topmost private firms of India that is fully dedicated in delivering handmade products to its customers. Established by John Bissell, an American working on Ford foundation, New Delhi, Fabindia is an Indian retail chain store for producing retailing garments, furnishings, fabrics, ethnic products that are manufactured using traditional techniques. The vary first venture of the company was to export Home furnishing products and then started its first domestic retail store in Greater Kailash, New Delhi. Today it has approximately 170 stores across India and whole world. The company is now being looked after by the son of William Bissell.
The story of Fabindia is just like a movie line. The brand Fabindia started as a one man export company of home furnishings by John Bissell in 1960 as "Fabindia Inc" .Previously working with Macy's, Bissell left New York and Came to India in the year 1958 as a consultant for the Ford Foundation and advised Government of India to run Central Cottage Industries Corporation. He then started production of goods for export with a permission of two years from the Indian Government. John firmly believed in the emerging Indian textile industry and was determined to showcase Indian handloom textiles with a way to provide employment to traditional artisans. In 1964, he met a designer, Terence Conran,who has newly established home furnishing retail,"Habitat", soon became one of its biggest customers. Bissell also travelled across craft based villages and towns meeting weavers and entrepreneurs, swatches that would produce flat weaves, pale colors and precise weights in handloom yardage, in the end he homed in on one suppliers. And since then there was no looking back for the company.
